San Francisco--The Names Project is celebrating its fifth anniversary while planning for the upcoming Washington, D.C. display of the AIDS Memorial Quilt on the weekend of October 9-11. An estimated 300,000 visitors are expected to converge in the nation's capital that weekend.
When it was first displayed in Washington in October of 1987, the Names Project Quilt consisted of less than 2,000 panels and weighed 2.3 tons. Today, five years later, the Quilt has grown to include well over 20,000 hand made panels and weighs a staggering 23.2 tons. Twenty thousand panels in five years represents the creation of a new panel every two hours.
That first display, at the 1987 March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, covered less than an acre of the Capitol Mall. On its fifth year anniversary this October, the Quilt will cover more than eight acres, stretching across the grounds of the Washington Monument and helping to focus the world's attention on the need for education and action in response to AIDS. The Quilt was first conceived by Names Project founder Cleve Jones as he was helping to organize the annual candlelight march in honor of San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone, who were assassinated in 1978. Jones asked march participants to write down the names of loved ones who had died of AIDS. At the end of the candlelight march, these names were taped onto the walls of the San Francisco Federal Building, reminding Jones of a patchwork quilt and inspiring him to formulate plans for the Names Project AIDS Memorial
